I think this quote means that your intelligence is not as high as character because your character is what people look at the most, but your intelligence helps you succeed because the more you study the better. You can have a wide intelligence but you can have a bad personality.

I think this quote means that the past or the future is not as important as the things that are in our present. If you did something in the past if less important than what you are going to do. But that is no comparison to what you are deciding to do at the exact moment your present.
