I think that this means that it is better for you to use the same effort in everything and  use it every day. Because then if you work hard today but tomorrow you are lazy you fall behind. In life to succeed you need to give all your effort every day to make sure you complete everything. And make sure that you work with intellegence every single time.

I think this quote means that your intelligence is not as high as character because your character is what people look at the most, but your intelligence helps you succeed because the more you study the better. You can have a wide intelligence but you can have a bad personality.
