In think this quote means that sometimes when you want to do something else that is not important and you do it you forget to do what actually was important. Like for example, let’s say you have an essay due in and you were supposed to work on it that day but instead you go smoke or have a beer with your friends you forget to do the essay and then you fall behind in class. And you will try to catch up as much as you  can but it’s harder.
