Student Success Statement 50

Student Success Statement
“Success is dependent on effort.”
Sophocles, Greek dramatist
I think this quote means that success will only happen if you try and put your effort into it. If you work hard and put 100% effort into it you will get good results and feel proud of your accomplishments. Like for example, if you put all your effort in school you can get good grades as the reward and feel proud about your achieving your goals. And you will want to set more goals.

How to Take on College Studying (Part 2)

How to Take on College Studying (Part 2)
Choose Where to Study :Where you should study depends on two factors: the environment in which you are best able to concentrate and the type of work you are planning to do.
Ø  The best places to study have a good light, a comfortable temperature and enough desk space—usually your dorm room, your apartment or the library.
Ø  For completing problem sets or brainstorming possible test questions, you may want to study with a group or at least in a setting where fellow students are available for discussion.
Ø  When you are reading a book chapters or working on a research paper, you are probably better off in a less social environment.
Improve Your Study Skills: here are simple steps you can take to help you get a handle on studying:
Ø  Have a routine for where and when to study.
Ø  Chose reasonable and specific goals that you can accomplish for each study session.
Ø  Do things that are harder or require more intense thought at your most productive time of the day.
Ø  Take breaks if you need them so you don’t waste time looking at material but not absorbing it.
Ø  Get to know students whom you respected and can study with or contact to ask questions
Ø  Keep up with the workload and seek help when you need it.

Jenna Huff wins Extreme Sportsmanship Award

Jenna Huff wins Extreme Sportsmanship Award

Jenna Huff is  a five sport participant in high school. she was running with her team for the state finals. throughout the whole entire race she was head to head with Deb an oppponent from the other school and she kept up with her but not eneough because Deb was always one little step ahaed of her. But 100 yards before the race finished Deb's hip started to hurt and she stopped runign. Jenna could have just pass her and run off but instead she helped Deb walk and before they could cross the finish line, Jenna pushed Deb one step ahead of her to make sure she will cross the finish line. i think Jenna did this because not just because it was the right thing to do but because maybe Deb would have one anyway, besides she was alwys one step ahead the whole race. Probably she did it because she felt like she was going to lose and she wanted to make sure Deb won. and because of her actions Jenna won the Extreme Sportsmanship Award from the U.S Olympic Commitee. and now Deb and Jenna started as opponents in the race have become friends and gotten to know more about each other. of course Jenna's pareants are proud of her.

How To Take on College Studying (Part 1)
Develop Good Study Habits:
In college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demands of a college class are probably more rigorous than those you are used to. You can succeed by knowing what to expect and how to handle it. Think of college as a full-time job, in which you spend 40 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and doing homework.
Being organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.
Decide When to Study
Work out about how many hours you need to study every day. Then make a schedule.
Ø  Figure out what6 blocks of time you have available throughout the day, in the evenings and on the weekends.
Ø  Consider what time of day you are most alert—there are morning people and night owls—and try to schedule your studying accordingly.
Ø  Think about whether you do better studying for a few hours at a time or sitting down for marathon sessions.

10 Times Management Tips for Students (Tips 5-10)
Tip 5. Review Your Notes Every Day: Reviewing helps you reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in class or have to take a pop quiz.
Tip 6. Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Your brain needs rest to perform at it peck. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
Tip 7. Communicate Your Schedule to Others: If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available at certain times of day and not to expect a response
Tip 8. Become a Taskmaster: Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.
Tip 9. Don’t Waste Time Agonizing: Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.
Tip 10. Determine Your Priorities: you can’t do everything else at once. Establish the importance of each time. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

When you do what you honestly feel, you won’t have any regrets. Your heart is your internal compass—it gives you direction and discernment. Just like a magnetic compass gives you directions, even true north, your personal compass, your heart, will point you in the true north, the exact directions and paths you need to trod.
4.Soul: Study scriptures and other sacred literature daily. In other words, feed you spirit because your spirit needs spiritual food just like your physical body needs temporal food to survive. Pondering, meditating, and reflecting are excellent Soul-sharpening activities. Try writing your thoughts, feelings, aspirations, concerns, and decisions in a diary or journal. “If you do what’s right, you have no need to fear.”
Anon
I think this quote means that you don’t have to be scared  of doing what’s right. Lke for example if you do something wrong you can show that you are not scared. But in the inside you are worrying that what if you get caught and if you do what will be the consequences. The problem is that because some people do something wrong the first time and don’t get caught the first time they think that means that they could keep on doing it over and over again. Like the people that smoke weed or do illegal drugs they might not get caught but they are worried that they might get caught or if somebody tells on them. If you choose the wrong you’re going to have the worries climbing up your shoulders more and more until they bring you down to the ground and end up suffering worse consequences than before.

Habit 7: Sharpen The Saw
Teens should never get too busy living to take time renew themselves. When teens “sharpen the saw” they are keeping their personal self sharp so that they can better deal with life. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of life –body, mind, heart, and soul.
1.Body: eat wholesome foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes. Avoid illegal drugs, smoking, alcohol, tobacco products, tattooing. Exercise regularly and effectively. Get plenty of rest at  night. Get to bed early and get up early each morning. “Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
2.Mind: think positively. Read. Study. Think. Analyze. Seek to read a good book each  month. Then each week. Ask intelligent questions. Observe. Develop your mind through positive “self-talk.”

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 6)

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 6)
Habit 6: Synergize
Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form V formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: learn to celebrate differences.
A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or the sax, or the vocalist, it’s all of them together that make up the “sound”. Each band member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone. No instrument is more important than another, just different.

“So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “in-group”, we lose sight of things that are far more important.”
Sean Covey
In think this quote means that sometimes when you want to do something else that is not important and you do it you forget to do what actually was important. Like for example, let’s say you have an essay due in and you were supposed to work on it that day but instead you go smoke or have a beer with your friends you forget to do the essay and then you fall behind in class. And you will try to catch up as much as you  can but it’s harder.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 5)

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 5)
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, and  then to be Understood
Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many don’t feel understood. This habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication sill there is: active listening.
Why is this habit the key to communication? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be respected and valued for who they are—a unique, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-cloned individual. People won’t expose their soft middles unless they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it, however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
Listen with your eyes, heart and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent). Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk and listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means we should listen twice as much as we talk. We actually learn more while listening rather than we talk. Learn to listen and listen to learn.
Listen, really listen, for understanding. Seek first to understand, and then to be understood--- listen.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (Habit 4)

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens  (Habit 4)
4. Think Win-Win
Teens can learn to foster  the belief that it is possible to create an atmosphere an atmosphere of Win-Win every relationship. This habit encourages the idea that in any given discussion or situation both parties can arrive at a mutually beneficial solution. Your teen will learn to celebrate the accomplishments of others instead of being threatened by them. Win-win is a belief that everyone can win. it is both nice and though all at once. It’s both nice and tough all at once. I won’t step on you but I won’t be your doormat either. You care about other people and you . it’s both of us it’s not matter of who gets either you or me . there more than enough food for everyone. It’s an all-you-can eat buffet.
Win-win always creates more. Perhaps the most surprising benefit of thinking win-win is the good feeling it bring on. The test of whether or not you are thinking win-win or one of the alternative is how you feel. Win-lose thinking will cloud your judgment and fill you with negative feeling.
Win-win will fill your heart with happy and serene thoughts. It will give you confidence. Even fill you with light. Think win-win or no deal.

“You cannot do wrong and feel right. It is impossible.”
Ezra T. Benson
I think this quote means that it is simply impossible to feel right about doing something that’s wrong. For example, you can’t feel good about robbing a bank and stealing others people’s money that they used to feed themselves and their families. Or you can’t feel good about passing a class if you are cheating in the work and tests. You can feel good about being bad. It’s like a superhero they feel good about saving the day. But if they don’t save the day and go to the dark side they feel guilty that they up on being good. Being good makes you happy.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 3)

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens (Habit 3)
Habit 3: Put Things First
Habit 3 is about Will and Will not power. This habit helps teens prioritize and manage their time so that they focus on and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting things first also means learning to overcome  fears and being  strong during difficult times. It’s living life according to what matters most. Putting things first deals with things that are:
Important or not important, urgent or not urgent. Let’s look at the four quadrants of time management:
Quadrant 1: Things that are Important and Urgent
Quadrant 2: Things that are Important but not Urgent
Quadrant 3: Things that are not Important but are Urgent
Quadrant 4: Things that are not Important and not Urgent
1.   Important & Urgent
2.   Important but not Urgent
3.   Not Important but are Urgent
4.    Not Important and Not Urgent

Quadrant 2 is the ideal place to send our time, doing things that are important but not urgent. Here’s where priorities  come into play. The results for living Quadrant 2 are:
1.Control  of your life
2.Balance
3.High Performance

So, in what quadrant are you spending most of your time? the key is to shift as much time as possible from Quadrant 2 and this is accomplished by planning. Spend more time planning and  incorporating the most important things first, things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the prize and reach for it.

Og Mandino
I think what this quote is trying to say is that the habits you do can help you succeed or fail. If you run every day for your benefit when it comes to running the mile in P.E class you will pass because it’s your habit so it will be a piece of cake for you or if you read a lot. When they test your reading status, you will pass with a high score because your use to read.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
If teens aren't clear about what they want to end up in life, about their values, goals, and what they stand for, they will wander, waste time, and be tossed to and fro by the opinions of others. help your teen create a personal mission statement which will act as a road map and direct and guide his decision-making process.
“Keep your eyes on the prize”. Determine your desired prize and don’t quit until you have realized the achievement of your prize. Then set another prize, another goal or desire that you would really like to achieve. Begin with the achievement of your prize in mind. Visualize and then realize. Start by having a target in mind; know where you are going.
One prize or goal you defiantly need to establish for yourself is the prize of an honorable graduation from high school – that you will receive your diploma honestly and with integrity-- that you earned it with perfect honesty.

Proactive people realize that the ball is in their court, that they are the captain of their own ship; that they are in control, control of their decisions, thoughts, choices, decisions, goals, actions, and priorities. Proactive people are self-starters; they don’t wait to be told what to do, they press forward with enthusiasm toward the achievement of their assignment, their duties, their responsibilities, their obligations. And I think that our habits makes us what we are means that the things you do every day on a daily basis say something about you if you run every day it shows that you are an athletic person. Or if you get into to trouble every day at school I think it means that you are a trouble maker and you like to waste your time and everybody’s time as well.  The habits you do reflect the type of person that you are. Whether it’s good or bad. Either way you need to make sure that the habits you choose are good so they reflect well upon you and others as well.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Students

7 Habits of Highly Successful Students
By Sean Covey
For teens, life is not a playground, it’s a jangle. And, being the parent of a teenager isn’t any walk in the park, either. In his book, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, author Sean Covey attempts to provide “a compass to help teens and their parents navigate the problems they encounter daily.”
How will they deal with the peer pressure? Mountain? Success or lack thereof? The life of a teenager is full of tough issues and life-changing decisions. As a parent, you are responsible to help them learn the principles and ethics that will help them reach their goals and live a successful life.
While it’s all well and good to tell kids how to live their lives, “teens watch what you do more than they listen to what you say.” Covey says. So practice what you preach. Your example can be very influential.
Covey himself has done well by following a parent’s example. His dad, Stephen covey, wrote the book 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, which sold 15 million copies. Sean’s a chip off the old block, and no slacker. His own book has rung in more than respectable 2 million copies sold. Here are his seven habits, and some ideas for helping your teen understand and apply them:

“Nothing is ever gained in doing what’s wrong.”
Wilfrod Woodruff
I think what this quote means is that is that even though you can expect to get a reward for choosing the right. You cannot expect a reward for choosing what’s wrong. Because you should and you never get a reward for doing the wrong things you are not to do. For example, if you get good grades you can get a reward in an assembly and be sitting in the stage waiting for your name to be called, or you can choose the wrong and behave bad and the results you end up sitting in the audience watching everyone else or your friends get awards except for you. It’s just one decision that can determine a reward or nothing in return.

Like for example, if you are going to do drugs it matters most importantly what type of drug you use and how you decide it will go into your body. Online learning can be powerful, stimulating, engaging experience for the student who can work and think independently. However, since most—if not all—of the learning takes place on your own time, you will not have the kind of direct supervision you would in a classroom. Online learning therefore requires a significant commitment from you. All education comes down to what you’re willing to invest in the experience—this is particularly true in the online environment. Commitment, self-discipline and self-motivation are all key qualities to ensuring success in an online course!

While some courses contain molecules that include videos other   activities, all of them require significant amounts of reading. For example if you work hard on your job to get a raise and you get it, it does not fail you because the raise is the reward for the hard work. Or you can invest thousands of dollars trying to build a house but it could collapse and all the money will go down the drain. But when you choose the right it never fails, it is 100% fail proof because it’s never wrong to do what’s right.

Successful Students 10

Successful Students 10
10. Successful Students are good time managers. Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of your life.
An elemental truth: you will either control time or be controlled by it! It’s your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. 1 study skills problem for college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non-students! Procrastinators are good excuse-makers. Don’t make academics harder on yourself than it has to be. Stop procrastinating. And don’t wait until tomorrow to do it!
The 10 items listed above are paraphrased from an article by Larry M Ludewig called Ten Commandments for Effective Study Skills which appeared in The Teaching Professor, December 1992.
